In all honesty, I wouldn't do anything too crazy. A million really isn't that much money these days, especially after you pay 400k to the government in taxes.

First thing I'd do is tell my friends and family that^^, and that other than my mother, NO ONE is getting a free handout.

So with the 600k left after taxes, I'd pay off the mortgage on my current house (110k). Then I'd take the remaining 490k and buy a house in the 350k range, and 'invest' the remaining 140k in another piece of rental property, most likely a house in my same neighborhood here.

Then I'd have a nice house that was totally paid off to live in, and 2 more to rent out at ~$800/month each.

Like I said, nothing crazy.
