Mariners give King Felix $175 Million Deal
Felix Hernandez agreed to a five-year, $135.5 million contract extension Thursday with the Seattle Mariners, sources told ESPN's Buster Olney.

Glad they locked him up and didn't trade him away. Time to get some better talent around him now and get out of the AL West basement.

guy is a horse, with the # of innings he throws at such a high level at a still young age. It will be worth it, if he stays healthy

Mariners better start shelling it out for better talent in the field. Wasted if he's the single player with great talent.

The A's success last year gives the M's hope and though, most people are unfamiliar with their current roster, there is quite a bit of talent. One decent bat could change the whole complexity.

Mariners have the the best farm system in the MLB right now so they can make some moves if they want or continue to develop I don't follow them so not sure what they plan on or have talked about doing but signing Felix was huge

The following Mariners ranked in the top 100 by MLB.com (prospect ranking):

Hard to be overrated when you're top 2-3 in MLB

Definitely, they aren't too far off from contending for the playoffs.

The M's are pretty young team. I get the impression that they are biding their time before they make a push. Both division titans are aging and feature huge team salaries which should shake up their team dynamics in the near-future. The biggest thing working against the M's is whether they can hang onto the young talent that they develope. The richest teams in the MLB are able to snipe and swoop in, offering money that teams like the M's won't match. At times, it really feels like the M's are a major league farm team for others. It's for this reason that I sort of don't like giving Felix such a large contract. The M's feature a pitchers park, the A's feature a pitchers park, the Angels feature a neutral park, and we all know that Arlington is a hitters park, and I am not sure about Houston. The M's can get bye with good but not great pitching. It's always a joy to see other teams fall for our pitchers, only to trade for them and realize that they aren't nearly as good as they have been packaged up to be.

dumb move. they are way over paying for him

the rest of their team is on a minor league level. There is no chance they dont finish in last place

Its not just about next year. He was signed through 2014 anyways, they just extended him. If their prospects and young guys don't pan out in the next few years they can still trade him.
