Shortly after the Bruins' season ended, Thomas posted on his Facebook page that he will sit out the 2012–13 season. General Manager Chiarelli confirmed Thomas's decision. Thomas's $5 million cap hit will count against the Bruins this season because of the NHL's 35+ age rule, but the Bruins will not be forced to pay his salary if he does not return.
