Plaxico Burress' controversial year has just taken a turn for the worse.

The New York Giants wide receiver accidentally shot himself in the leg on Friday night, FOXSports.com has learned, not long after being ruled out of Sunday's game against the Redskins with a hamstring injury.

He spent the night in the hospital and the injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. The team is still trying to gather further information on the incident.

This has been a troubled year for Burress, who opened the season with a lengthy contract dispute. He was also suspended one game in October for violating team rules, benched during another game and hit with a series of fines.

The Giants are atop the NFC standings with a 10-1 record and are vying for their seventh straight win Sunday when they face Washington.

Burress initially pulled his injured hamstring in the Giants' win over Baltimore on Nov. 16. He then aggravated the injury in the opening series last Sunday against Arizona, and then sat out the rest of that game.

Domenik Hixon, who is dealing with an ankle injury, will start in Burress' place.

How can there be no charges against anyone? Its 100% illegal in the state of NY to carry a gun in a night club (police exempted). If he shot himself he should still have been charged with possesion of a firearm in a restricted place, discharge of a firearm in a public place,etc.

You know, Ive carried a handgun 24/7 legally for almost 30 years now, and have managed to not shoot myself or anyone else accidentley in that same time period. From my experiences teaching firearm classes, its usually the young guys who dont take the classes serious enough, all they are concerned with is getting that concealed weapons permit to show off. Unfortunatley I have no discretion is issuing the permits, if they can pass the class and hit the target I have to sign off on the license. Id personally deny about 25% of the people who come thru if I had the authority.

I was baffled when they inked him to a new contract earlier this year. It's clear that they are as good or better without him.

This might be a break for the Giants. Maybe now they can cut him "with cause" and not be on the hook for all of his contract. We'll see how this goes.

It's probabably a break for the team as far as chemistry as well. I know they won with him last year, but he's a chump and they'll win one just as easily without him.

Giants WR Burress suffers accidental gunshot wound

New York Giants star wide receiver Plaxico Burress accidentally shot himself in the leg Friday, according to multiple media reports.

Burress was hospitalized with gunshot injuries Friday night that were not believed to be life-threatening, FOX Sports.com reported Saturday.

A spokesman for the Giants on Saturday told PA SportsTicker that the team had no comment, although they acknowledged they are aware there was an incident.

Burress has not practice all week due to an ailing hamstring and already had been ruled out of Sunday’s game against the Washington Redskins.

Citing sources familiar with the situation, the New York Daily News reported that Burress was shot late Friday night, but no further details of the incident are available.

Burress, who has 41 receptions for 454 yards and four touchdowns, aggravated the hamstring injury early in Sunday’s 37-29 triumph over the Arizona Cardinals and has not practiced this week.

It has already been a tumultuous season for Burress, who missed the team’s October 5 game against the Seattle Seahawks after being suspended for missing a team meeting.

Burress, who signed a five-year, $35 million contract extension prior to the season, also was involved in a sideline confrontation with coach Tom Coughlin during a game and has been fined multiple times.

The Record of Bergen County reported last month that police responded to two domestic disturbance calls at the home of the star wide receiver in the past six months.

Well, I guess Burress has been a crumb his whole career. He's always late for meetings and practices, subverting coaches, etc. It's just that the team more or less covers it all up, probably standard PR. Although I think the problem with Burress has mainly been insubordination, perhaps similar to a Randy Moss. I don't think Burress has had major problems outside the locker room in the community as much.

What about Marvin Harrison's deal a while back. I thought Marvin was the model citizen WR in the line of the great Jerry Rice. Ends up Marvin had his own thug life. That incident broke the mold for me, now I pretty much assume these guys are living like Kings and basically can get away with murder, that's just the life that surrounds an NFL player for whatever reason. I think the harder the league and teams try to cover this stuff up, the further these problem players push until it can't be covered up anymore when it hits the police blotter.

So many NFL players have been arrested that I have to think that half of the problem is the cops. A few years back they shot a Charger, after basically stalking him. Lot of racist cops out there.
