URBANA, Ill. -- A former University of Illinois gymnastics coach has been charged with secretly videotaping a gymnast in a campus locker room.
Champaign County State's Attorney Julia Rietz said Jon Valdez was charged Tuesday with one count of unauthorized videotaping, which is a class 4 felony.
Rietz said the man who was taped found a camera hidden in a locker in late September and reported it to Valdez. The man later checked and found Valdez hadn't reported the camera to police.
Valdez was the personal coach of U.S. Olympian Justin Spring. He resigned as assistant men's gymnastics coach at Illinois on Oct. 17, citing personal reasons.
The attorney who represents Valdez hasn't returned a call from The Associated Press seeking comment.
