What's the Point of Nominated/Nominating Posts?

I think the whole idea is a little stupid if you ask me. There should be a reward for it or something. To me it seems this feature was drawn up during a drunken gathering between the SBR Mods

SBR went with "nominated posts" all the other forums went the way of Facebook and you can like a post.

It's basically a way of saying you agree, but are too cheap to give points for the good post.
