How do people cap totals?

Started thinking about this in another thread - and came to the conclusion that this is one area I don't have a clue.

Considering the amount of work I put into sides, it seems that I can tweek those stats to project and cap totals.

Outside of the remedial PF/PA capping tool - what are other peoples strategy to attack totals?

Easier IMO to do totals @ half time when you can look at tempo and stats. Basketball especially, you can see how the foul calls are going also. Football, look for games with a high number of plays being run if you like overs + their ability in finishing drives. Low play totals and stalled drives better for under tries, etc. Prior to a game, you're looking at the usual stuff - offense v. defense, vice versa + weather factors for football and baseball, etc. Recent trends tell a lot as well if you're betting stuff like team totals. Take the Eagles anemic defense. They had given up 28 points in every game since their DC got fired. Dallas was offered @ 27.5 last night. Easy try for me on the over, although I punched it down to an even 27 just in case.

I agree Eagles. You speak with a lot of true logic. But, for example... let's say you witnessed a lot of stalled drives, turnovers, sloppy play... causing in theory... AN OVER to go Under the 1st half. What would your theory be in the 2nd half? If the O/U was originally 51 and they only scored 17 for a half. The line comes out 25.5 2H. Do you go over... saying to yourself... there's no way they will continue to play that sloppy?? Or... will that offense stall out again??? To me... it's still a crap shoot.

i like to try to get inside the coaches head for totals. whats his gameplan gona be? hows he gona react to getting down? for basketball, will he be more likely to concede early or keep fouling forever?
