Actually, Hitler lost in his presidential election bid in 1932. Von Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor after no majority party was established. The 1933 Reichstag fire was blamed on the communists (everbody hates the communists), and Hindenurg suspended basic rights, and began detentions without due process. It was after the Enabling Act was passed by the Reichstag that Hitlers cabinet was given some legislative powers not previously allowed in Germanys constitution. One day prior to president Von Hindenbergs death in 1934, the now enabled cabinet abolished the office of president and merged it's powers with that of the chancellor, making Hitler both head of government, and head of state. We know how it turned out after that.

So, no Hitler was NEVER directly voted into power by the the people in an election, however, having received 35% of the vote in his failed presidential '32 bid did help him to become chancellor. After the '32 elections produced no majority governments in the Reichstag, Hitler convinced Von Hindenburg to hold new elections the following year. While the Nazi party did recieve more votes by the people, they did not receive a majority, and it took abolishing other parties and new dictatorial powers to have the Reichstag vote the former powers of the president into the Chancellorship.

So, no, Hitler was never elected by the people into power, but one can say his second place finish in the election did give him the power to be put into position to maneuver his way into a dictator.

And most people are clueless about history, regardless of their home nation.
