Depends on if the ball ends up behind the line of scrimmage (live ball) or in front of the line of scrimmage (dead ball and can't be advanced by punt team).

Question for you guys: If I punt the ball and you bobble it (or it indirectly hits your player), it's a live ball and I can jump on it for possession. So why isn't a partially blocked punt (see USC/UCLA) a live ball? The ball is released by the kicker, is kicked and thus is a ball in action, whereas it is then touched (partial block) by the defense. The ball goes forward 20 yards bouncing around. Why isn't that live? Just curious. May be like an "exception" in the rule book or something but I hadn't heard a valid answer before. thx
