Looks like the opening bid is $150,000. I hear it can be purchased immediately - and avoid the bidding process - for $500,000.

    place your bid

Apparently it is being sold by a front-office employee. I certainly don't blame a front-office employee for putting it up for bids. I think they would be nuts not to. But it brings up the question, are they giving these rings to too many people?

Hope the guy can't get some good money. Since he isn't exactly a long time fan and needs the money certainly seems reasonable.

$150,000 seems a little excessive IMO though to start the bidding at.

Then you haven't been seen Red Sox nation then. I bet somebody ends up paying 500k for that ring.

i've actually saw the 2004 world series ring up close and personal with my own two eyes. theres no way even a collector would shell out 500,000 for that ring IMO

I would say so Mudcat. They need to limit the number of rings they give out. Lets check back in 2 days to see how much this thing sold for.

              Precisely.

Can anyone do some legwork and determine WHO gets a championship ring in the NFL, MLB, NBA, etc? I really only follow the NFL close enough to even have a guess about it, but I thought only the players and the Head Coach get a ring. This excludes any assistant coaches as well as players released before playoffs, but includes players on IR. I would imagine the owner would get a ring, but what about franchises with multiple owners, including the Green Bay Packers who have thousands of owners!

Then again, this is all really nitpicking, because it's all about the collectors' market. I mean, if they sold Pedro's jockstrap from the game where he threw down that 73 year old Yankee's manager, that might get a few thousand on Ebay. It's all just a joke.

So it is. It was still up as of my last posting. I wonder why they would take that auction down. Maybe its stolen.

Maybe it was a lower-ranked front office employee who got one and their boss explained to them how both the ring and their job were priceless. Other than the obvious answer, that you're a greedy piece of scum, why would anyone sell the thing? I could maybe see if you were facing some large marical bills in your family or something like that. But otherwise, why would you do it unless you were a piece of sh¡t and completely void of pride and class?

I doubt it would be stolen (the seller would have to be a first class fool - there would be a lot of interest in the auction) and there would be any number of reasons why the auction would be pulled. Most likely is that the Red Sox put pressure on ebay to pull it citing any random infringment they could think of.

What's so wrong about selling it? It's simply a thing which someone doesn't want and wants to cash-in to get the financial compensation for it. People in all walks of life are given goods in recompense for work given or whatever and I don't see anything wrong in selling it on. If you object to the selling of it, then you should really be having a pop at the Red Sox for handing these rings out like candy.

BTW, remember that SBR shirt you sent me? It's going on ebay tonight.

Maybe you're right, taco, about it not being as bad a notion to sell it as I see it. Perhaps it's just some bean counter in the front office who isn't into sports at all. Just hard for me to understand someone employed by a sports franchise that wins the big banana and then wants to sell their 'share' of the trophy.

If I was in the position to do it, I would sell the ring it in a heartbeat. I would much rather have $150,000+ than a ring.

For me, that's the no-brainer to end all no-brainers.

My thoughts exactly. I doubt I'd have a moment of regret my whole life over that decision.
