Wasn't the illegal pass on SD? Wouldn't Pitt just decline it?

That needs to be investigated. Something very wrong with that call. And I won on it!

Since it was ruled an ilegal forward pass, the play was dead as soon as the ball hit the ground, as it was in effect an incomplete pass.

The pass that hit the ground was not the "illegal forward pass." The earlier pass was the one that might have been the illegal forward pass, so the play should have been whistled dead even before the pass that hit the ground.

(For the record, I'm still unconvinced that there was a forward pass.)

Adding to LT's correct explanation........ if that play would have occurred with 5 minutes left in the game, it would have been San Diego's ball, 5 yards behind the spot of the foul, loss of down. Pittsburgh would not have been granted possession. I hate the rule, but it was applied correctly.

the ball that hit the ground was a lateral, the first pitch was illegal

Because it was not initially called a forward pass. No flag was thrown. It is a reviewable play, and since they were inside of 2 minutes, the replay showed (the ref's interpretation of the replay anyway) that one of the passes was forward.

On a related note, if the pass from LT to Chambers was illegal, shouldn't there still have been one second on the clock?
