Okay guys, I am probably making a BIG mistake posting this here, but when you spend as much time as I do writing, you tend to seek feedback. I was told by other friends I would lose my man pass if I posted this here, but I want your guys opinion on this story I wrote. I am considering developing this into a Romance Novel. Consider this a rough draft, a treatment so to speak. I would appreciate any feedback. If it sucks let me know.
"Foreign Affair"
Jennifer had enough soil between her fingers for a lifetime. As she hunched over to look at her local prize lilies, she knew the hard work at her shop was worth it. Something tangible from something undeveloped. No doubt about it, she had a gift. After a string of failed relationships, it made sense to shy away from what she could not control. If it wasn't Steve the Mama's Boy or Brad the Bad Boy, it was the no call no show bartender from Lakeland. At least the only mother she had to deal with when growing her flowers was Mother Nature. Resigned to her own design, Jennifer smiled and sighed. "We need more water, and when I mean water I mean wine."
"Christian, your father has sent me to beckon your appearance." Christian was peering through his tinted bedroom window looking at the nearest star. For Christian, that star wasn't more than 500 miles away. Located right on the cusp of the Nebulus Galaxy, Christian and his family presided over a nation of 10,000 on the planet Gossamer. His father, wise in experience, but now old and frail has made it a point to mold his son to become the leader of this small planet for some time now. Christian had always wanted something different, but realized in a galaxy far far away, culture was nondescript and devoid of feeling. "Your father feels it is time." As Christian walked down the corridor to his fathers room, he felt the inevitable was going to happen. Unfortunately for him, the inevitable had come way to soon.
"Do you really see this becoming a way of life for you Jen?" Jennifer's best friend Stephanie had seen Jennifer divert her attention away from men before into projects, this was just the first one that had reaped some benefits. "Whats wrong with planting in the morning and drinking in the evening. I am a regular Martha Stewart." Stephanie could see that the wine was beginning to kick in and knew it was only a matter of time before Jennifer would ask. "Care for a dance me lady." Stephanie never said no to Jennifer's request. Hell it was the best proposal she had gotten all night. On the dance floor Jennifer looked every bit as glorious underneath the soft light eminating from above. "You can be a killer when you want to be Jen." In the corner of her eye Jennifer saw one of her ex's. "May I cut in?" Stephanie glared at Sean. "It's alright Steph, I won't bite her." Jennifer had forgotten what it was like to dance with a boy. For one, his feet were a lot bigger than Stephanie's. "Are we cool Jen?" Jen knew those four words and the bottle of wine she had drank was going to lead to a dangerous night.
"You are leaving first thing tomorrow morning Christian." Christian was still recovering from what his father had just told him. 25 years of prepping for the role of leader, Christian never thought he would go to Earth. It is where I learned all I did about love son. The love that filled me made it possible for you to be born. Christian's father began to regale him with a story about how Gossamer had been a planet that had fed off the emotion of love for centuries. It was also told to him that the emotion of love had been forgotten by most of the townspeople, and without it, the planet would wither away. "Your task is to go to Earth son and bring back all the genuine love you can find. Learn about it, talk about it, find it. I would go, but as you can see, I am to frail and my heart has weakened. Love is so strong, it takes a strong man to embody it. Christian, the planet is counting on you to bring back as much love as you can." As Christian looked into his fathers eyes, he knew those were the last words his father was going to say to him. It is as if he wanted his son to know how important love was. As Christian went back to his room, he cried. His father gone, the planet on his shoulders. He only hoped he could bring back the love to sustain a planet starving for it.
It wasn't the alarm that woke her up this morning. "Damnit, I'll be there in a minute." Jennifer awoke to Sean putting his pants on. "Work honey. Gotta go. We should get together sometime soon for drinks or dinner." Jennifer knew their was a snowballs chance of that happening. Sean was just that, a good lay, but devoid of anything else. Dinner with him would mean conversation, and Jennifer would rather talk to her lilies than that moron. Grabbing a cup of coffee, Jennifer headed out to her greenhouse. What was usually a quiet and serene area became a place of tumolt when Jennifer walked in. Lying next to her lillies was a semi conscious man dressed in what only could be described as something she had seen on an old Miami Vice episode. It's as if Tubbs crashed into her greenhouse, without the five o'clock shadow. Grabbing a hoe, Jennifer stalked slowly towards the stranger. Dazed, Christian turned around to get a better look at what was approaching him. Even from another planet, Christian knew what danger was, and he didn't want any part of it. "Please Miss, I bear you no harm. I just..." "Just what, came to look at my flowers, or were you trying to get a look at something else!" "Something else?" Christian was 25, but had no idea what sex or physical beauty entailed. Gossamer was devoid of that emotion as well. Jennifer saw a look in Christian's eyes that told her he was harmless and confused. Never the smartest when it came to men, Jennifer walked closer to Christian. She had noticed a gash over his right eye. "Are you alright?" "I guess, I mean this is Earth isn't it?"
For the next hour Christian told Jennifer a tale that rivaled something out of "Star Wars". With hoe still in hand, Jennifer poured Christian a cup of coffee. "So you are here to find out about love? Well I hate to break it to you, but you came to the wrong girl. What has eluded your planet has eluded me for about the same amount of time." Jennifer didn't know what was crazier, talking to Christian or believing anything he was saying. It was as if the words that came out of his mouth were so genuine, it had to be true. "So where do I look for this love?" Jennifer thought for a second. "Have you ever seen the movie The Notebook?"
What seemed like a short time became a week. Christian had made himself home in Jennifer's greenhouse, and in return helped Jennifer with her planting. Although Gossamer was a small planet, it was a fertile one. Christian had a green thumb literally and figuratively. The two of them had spent their days planting and their nights watching movies, spying on lovesick teenagers making out and listening to sappy love songs. Jennifer took the role of teacher very seriously, and the more time she spent with Christian, the more she realized he was sincere. "How much time do you have on Earth?" "I must be back in 3 weeks time, for without the knowledge you are feeding me, my planet will die." Jennifer had heard the term lovesick before, but this was a little to much. The time she had spent with Christian had reawakened her own feelings about love. "Jennifer, this love that we have seen, I notice you do not have it as well. May I ask why?" Jennifer knew that question was coming, and in all her pondering she did not have an answer. "Maybe it is because I always hoped love would come to me, not vice versa." Looking at Christian, she saw the duality in her statement. It was as if Christian was sent from above to show her that love can only come if you are adverse to accepting it. Christian smiled at Jennifer, he did not know why he was smiling, but it felt good. "I think I am beginning to understand what love is."
The next three weeks, Jennifer and Christian were inseperable. Stephanie hadn't seen Jennifer out for almost a month, and was getting a little concerned. Jennifer decided to introduce Christian to Stephanie over a bottle of wine. As the three of them sat at the local bar drinking, Stephanie was confused. "So this guys is an alien who was sent down to this planet to learn about love, and for the last 3 weeks you have been showing him love in its many splendid form. Mind you, you can't keep a guy for more than a month and you are teaching HIM about love? That's like Stevie Wonder teaching me how to drive!" As insane as everything sounded, Stephanie was at ease with Christian as well. If nothing else, she hadn't seen Jennifer this happy in a long time. God knows he was better looking than most of the other guys she was hanging out with....plus he smelled like lilacs. "So have you taught StarBoy about sex yet?" Jennifer slapped Stephanie in the knee. "What is this sex you talk about?" Before Jennifer had a chance to say anything, Sean came from behind and grabbed her. "Jenny baby, how you feeling tonight?" Stephanie rolled her eyes, and looked at Christian. For someone that didn't know anything about love, he was beginning to learn something about jealousy. "I have off from work tomorrow, and wanted to know if you wanted to come back to my house and watch a movie." "Like Notebook?" Christian asked. Jennifer laughed. Sean this is Christian, he is a new friend. "Hi guy, you don't mind if I steal Jenny away for a moment do you?" Christian bowed his head down. A the two walked away Stephanie spoke. "You know those two used to date. They aren't anymore." Christian was confused. the one thing he thought he learned about love is that when you have it in front of you,you try not to let it go. The more he thought of this and the more he saw Sean and Jennifer talk, the more he knew he had to express his love for her. Stephanie, being the sharpest tool in the shed noticed this as well. "Go get her, I'll play interference." Christian went up to Jennifer and tapped her on the shoulder "May I have this dance?'
That night Jennifer and Christian talked and laughed. Christian knew he had only a couple more days left on Earth and he wanted every minute to be spent with her. The one side effect to Jennifer and Christians time together was the flowers were in bloom like she had never seen them before. "Sometimes if you let things be, they flourish on their own." Christian felt a warmth flush over his body. As the two of them stood in the greenhouse looking at the flowers and each other, Christian put his head towards hers. "Can I give you some of my warmth?" As Christian pressed his lips against Jennifer's, he felt that transference of emotion he had seen, read about and heard about for the last month. If this was what father had wanted him to bring back to his planet, he understood now the importance of it. As Jennifer and Christian kissed, she whispered in his ear. "It's true, you do smell like lilacs."
The day to leave had come for Christian. It had been unspoken since they met, but ultimately his time on Earth was up. If he didn't get back immediately his planet would perish. When Jennifer asked if he would come back to visit, he explained how a trip to Earth from his planet is only feasible every 25 years, henceforth the long wait between his father's and his trip. Jennifer spoke of parallel universes and other science fiction stuff trying to find a way they could see each other again, but to no avail. She realized this was it. As the two embraced in the greenhouse, she thanked him. He smiled from that warm spot that now harbored the love she had shown him, and with that he dissapeared. As a bright light eminated from the greenhouse, Jennifer looked at her flowers and watched them rise up to the heavens. It was as if they were saying goodbye to Christian as well. "Things will flourish in due time." Jennifer whispered as she walked out of her greenhouse, put the hoe back in its shed, and kissed the skies goodnight.
