gambling makes sports for me. I'll watch a lot of games, but it's fun to make bets on games that you wouldn't normally watch.

I only watch sports because I wager on games, otherwise most sports are boring for me.

If I didn't bet I'd likely only be interested in watching playoff hockey.

I would tend to agree that gambling ruins sports.

I used to be a sports fan and get some big thrills when my teams did well. Like watching the Blue Jays build from nothing to back-to-back World Series.

I used to be a Habs fan and I remember that feeling when I was a kid when they were in the playoffs, and I'd wake up in the morning thinking about them and I had their posters on my walls. It was all-absorbing, then a game would come on and it was a thrill.

Those Habs teams won a lot too. That helped.

Now I don't give a crap about teams and I don't get those thrills. I'm sure it has a lot to do with gambling. Personally I don't like to watch games I bet on.

I still enjoy curling. I am really looking forward to the men's Hockey team in the Vancouver Olympics.

But that's about it for sports for me.

I feel the exact same way with the exception of the last two sentences. It makes me sad sometimes when I think about it.

I find enjoyment simply watching games. I really don't consider what I do gambling, rather investing. However, my methods are certainly much different than most of yours. In fact, I generally prefer watching games that I've scalped or middled rather than one in which I have on a side or total. I hate sweating games or anything beyond my control, for that matter. I think it's akin to constantly worrying whether your plane is going to crash while midflight. If it doesn't, you just put yourself through a ton of stress for no good reason, and if it does, there's nothing you could do to stop it from happening...

Sports is so popular now because of sports betting

ESPN flourished because of it and all their programming is geared towards it.

I'm sure gambling has a lot to do with my changed attitude about sports - but it also might just be getting older. I suspect that, whether I gambled or not, sports would seem a lot more trivial than it used to.

There are games that come up that seem like they should be interesting - and I think, 'Okay, I'll watch that' - but after 6 minutes I am flipping the channels and looking for other things to do.

I enjoyed that 3.5 inning final segment of the World Series this year. That seemed like the right length for a sporting event.

But being a serious gambler and therefore not having favorite teams has definitely sucked a lot of the innocent fun out of things.

I don't bet on/against teams that I root for. And rarely watch games that I bet on. Keeps me on the level.

I find that if I'm doing cardio (stationary bike, for example) in front of a TV with a game that I have money on, I tend to get a better workout. A very healthy way to sweat a game.

If gambling ruins sports, the one thing that does the opposite - i.e. makes sports seem extra-great - is drinking.

I am a recovering addict and when I used to drink there was nothing that made more sense than sitting on my butt and watching sports. And of course I could get all boozy and extra-emotional depending on what was happening.

I couldn't always remember who won the next morning, but I could always look it up - and start getting ready for the next game.

And the moral of the story is...

Gambling, if you're making a serious attempt to win and not just have action, can make sports dull. Booze takes away the dull feeling. So our two options are gamble to lose, or gamble to win and get drunk. I choose the latter, and I hope everyone else does too.
