#37Oh, no doubt. Trust me, I wouldn't want to be hit over the middle by Ronnie Lott or sacked by LT.Originally posted by McBa1nVery true - no doubt on how much bigger/faster/stronger players are in the modern game.
Ever seen tape on Damon Deacon Jones or guys like "Night Train" Lane from way back (I know he was a DB, but still, forearm blows/headslaps were legal back then)? The game was allowed to be more physical even as recent as the 80s when they installed the '2 step' rule to prevent cheap shots on the QB. There sure were a lot of beasts even back then... Not as many 'freaks' like the modern era, but sheesh - no idea how most of those QBs even lived, because it was easy as crap to cheap shot a QB... And remember, they weren't wearing body armor that can stop incredible amounts of force.
I'm just saying there weren't as many of them back in the day as there are now. It truly amazes me how many teams have DPRs that are just destroyers now.Comment -

#40It won't be long before some of these lightning fast freaks get paid huge money to become OL. It'll happen. They streamlined DL, it will happen on the other side of the ball. Power running is becoming a thing of the past.Originally posted by No coincidencesOh, no doubt. Trust me, I wouldn't want to be hit over the middle by Ronnie Lott or sacked by LT.

#43Didn't see Favre's name mentioned anywhere(which is a must for a topic like this). I was at a NYG@GB game a few years back. Brett got concussed and was on the sidelines. It was 4th and 4, he heard his number and ran on the field waving the backup off the field. Then he threw a 40 yard TD.Comment -

#45You actually bring up a good point about being hit over the middle (not to get too off topic). I was thinking about that this morning when reviewing some tape. Man, receivers still get railed over the middle - but with the current rules? Sheesh - lots of yards that didn't happen even 5 years ago happen over the middle all the time now. You just did NOT go in the middle of the field vs a player like Ronnie Lott... Unless you wanted to spend time on a stretcher.Originally posted by No coincidencesOh, no doubt. But hell yeah man, I'm with you. In the history of the NFL, I don't think there have been more game changing players defensively that can hit you like a truck.Comment -

#46Anyone who watched him play (or as someone like me that have seem 99.99% of his professional snaps), there's no need to bring him up. It's already understood he's the toughest mofo to play the position since Unitas. The guy played a SEASON with a f'd up THROWING HAND thumb. And by f'd up, it was trashed - and he still kept the team 'in the hunt'. His consecutive games played streak is the stuff of legend. People don't appreciate him because of his retirement crap and espn over-saturation, but in reality, over time, his legend will only grow. It would also help for him to re-connect with Packer fans he basically has given the finger to. As far as toughness goes in the modern era, the gold standard begins/ends with Favre... Also gotta mention the toughness of his heart. Guy played sick lights out (with a lot of luck) the Monday Night after his pops died.Originally posted by ronzerDidn't see Favre's name mentioned anywhere(which is a must for a topic like this). #47I left his name out only because I feel like everyone believes and agrees that he's tough as hell.
