Good point sort of... I thought it was an offensive penalty, ESPN is wrong this should be looked at cause it should have been first and 5. I have no idea, but if the book regraded, then it probably was no first down. I am guessing after the 5 yard penalty, he ran for two yards not 7, so 2nd and 3 was correct.

Based on this, the offense was awarded an automatic 1st down on the penalty. Otherwise it would have been 1st and 5. Then the 7 yard run would have been a 1st down anyway, so there was definitely a 1st down on that drive either way

Ya, you are right, illegal contact IS an automatic first down, this should have been a loss, unless there rules state something about it not being earned on a penalty, which I highly doubt.

That's a penalty resulting in a 1st down, but since it's a penalty, it's considered a no play, so they didn't MAKE the first down on that drive..

It can go either way but that would be my defense

Semantics. Since a first down by penalty counts as a first down in the stats, it is essentially a "made" first down.
