Did people think The Chief was racist at Illinois?

He is getting a revival tonight at Assembly hall by a group that paid to rent the hall tonight

Hokies and Jayhawks come to mind. Both racist against everything since they don't exist in life.

Trying to find the single source of the Jayhawk nickname is like trying to bottle the wind. Some articles track the nickname for Kansans back to 1848 and others 1858. Some say the word was first used to describe lawlessness and others say it's always been a complimentary moniker. (And differences of those opinions can probably be best described as territorial as Missourians have been know to still say the word Jayhawk describes a vicious ruthlessness.)

To understand the name and to understand the animosity and pride it brings up you have to know that the name was born in a time when Kansas was known as Bleeding Kansas. Kansas was a Free State. Missouri aligned with the slave trade. There was bloodshed all up and down the border. Today, the bloodshed has ended but the rivalry (and actual animosity) between the states still very much exists. You will find it in the attitudes of the people, where they will and won't live, the city tax codes... You'll see if for yourself once you have lived here a while.

But getting back to the name Jayhawk or Jayhawkers you will find that I've mixed in some links here and there so that you can do some of your own research. I even threw in a link concerning the history of the "rock chalk" chant the University of Kansas fans sing before each game and at the end of every victory in football and basketball. (And each link is unique...no duplicates.)

So take a few minutes and discover a piece of Kansas history and get to know the State of Kansas and what Jayhawker really means.

One last word of warning...you may not find it the best idea to call a Kansas State alumni a Jayhawk. Trust me, this won't go too well.
