I always thought it was about democracy....until the gay rights lobby get a result they don't like.

Actually, the founding fathers created a republic rather than a full-on democracy to protect the minority, descenting opinion. They did not trust the electorate to govern. As in a true Democracy, the minority opinion would never be given credence or consideration. They realized that people tend to vote for their own self-interest, not in the name of what is fair, just, or constitutional.

the problem here isnt gay people wanting to get married or some people wanting to stop gay people from getting married, the problem is government getting involved.

why is it up to the government to define marriage?
why do you have to have a marriage license to get married?
marriage is suppose to be a spiritual/religious ceremony that is define by that persons own spiritual/religious beliefs.
the problem came from many many years ago when the government decided to get involved in the marriage ceremony.

so if youre not gay, then you dont have to worry about if gay marriage is okay (or legal) since your beliefs only apply to your marriage.

Saying that Prop 8 isn't about civil rights is, quite simply, an admission of ignorance. A civil right is a right under the civil law that is granted to people within a given jurisdiction. One such right is the right to a civil marriage. Same-sex couples in California had this right before the election, and Prop 8 was wholly and fundamentally about taking away this right under the civil law.
