has any team intentionally fumble the ball to get a first down?

I forget who it was, but I could have sworn there was a player that when reaching out for a first down could fumble the ball with a spin on it to get the extra 2 or 3 yards for a first down.

I was always told it used to happen and was then made illegal. Never really bothered to see if thats true or not though

it is illegal late in the game, not sure what time on the clock, also if they feel it is intentional, you can't just roll it forward anytime
