If Phil Hughes beats Verlander tonight..........
.... I will take back every miserable thing I ever said about him.
And believe me, I have said a lot about that PoS.

Phil Hughes has a chance tonight to make a major statement, and if he's ever going to be labeled a good, money pitcher, he needs to step up.

    He's not a kid anymore.

I have stayed away from commenting on any tigers v yanks threads so far for today's game but this one may be the most true and most interesting out of all of them.

Tigers have their mojo at the plate right now and have verlander going who is their man and has been a stud of late.

Yanks couldn't hit water if they jumped out of a boat. With that said they have a day off and get away fromthe boos of yankee stadium.

They still have about a gazillion all stars between them but that doesn't matter with their mentality at the plate right now.

With how big of a prospect Hughes was supposed to be he hasn't really lived up to it and he isn't exactly a young guy. With this start tonight he could make a case that he can pitch in a big game and take the reigns as the front of the rotation guy going forward and get a roll and maybe have his team feed off that.

      Who knows tho

Hughes hasn't come close to living up to all the hype, but he did pitch well down the stretch.

He has yet to put together one semi-consistent good season as a starter. That year he went 18-8? He was pretty bad for most of the season (after a good first seven starts) and was propped up by a ton of run support.

His success came when they used him as a setup man in 2009, but they wanted him as a starter, and it's been a roller coaster.

hughes vs verlander?? this is not the regular season.. yankees are treating this like game 7, they will have a slew of relief pitchers ready to go at the first sign of trouble. make no mistake the yankees can put up runs in a hurry
