#48Chamberlain sucksOriginally posted by PhillyFlyersThey won the AL East WITHOUT MARIANO RIVERA.
They suffered through a plethora of injuries.
Look at the injuries they battled through this season and tell me if any other team would have survived something comparable.
Rivera
Pineda
Chamberlain
Sabathia
Pettitte
Nova
Teixeira
A-Rod
WTF! To put this into perspective, the Phillies lost only two important players in comparison in Ryan Howard and Chase Utley and were floundering all year long.
The Yankees were devastated with injuries to key players and not only survived, but won 95 games and the division.
I should also point out the year Derek Jeter had.
This will go down as one of the greatest seasons ever by a 38 year old. Led MLB in hits. Scored 100+ runs. Hit over .300.
He literally carried the Yankees for over a 3 month stretch in which he was fukking phenomenal.
In my view, he is the true MVP of the AL.
If injuries hadn't played such a huge role this season and the Yankees had been fully healthy from the start, we might have been talking about this Yankees team as among the best ever.
Nova sucks
Pettitte was a gift that showed up in spring training, it's not like he was in their plans when they put together the team.
Arod and Tex missed about 30 games - big deal
Sabathia missed 5 starts - big deal
Losing Rivera is somewhat big but the Yankees are the only team in baseball that could afford to pay a former closer, closer money to be a setup guy. So having Soriano on the roster really took the heat off there.Comment -

#49Originally posted by PhillyFlyersHow can anyone say they were massive underachievers with the best record in baseball and given the injuries they suffered?
That is just insane.
Oakland was nearly entirely healthy for the whole season.
Except for their two best pitchers, McCarthy and Anderson. And they lost a few guys like Inge and Crisp for a while during the season too. Also, the ones that were healthy ended up being AAA call-ups and cast-offs. Probably their only legit player that lasted the full season and played well without injury was Cespedes.Comment -

I tire of that argument that "the Yankees throw money at it"
they still gotta play 162 games
still have to manage it
angles, dodgers, red sox, marlins all spent tons of cash.
yankees made good additions with ichiro and lowe. good leadership in girardi and jeter.Comment -

Id be interested to know how much guys like Roberston, Eppely, Logan make... I despise all three of those fukkers. They cost me some serious money this year.Comment
