Tokyo fears Obama strengthens Chicago Olympic bid
I feel Japan is definitely overacting with their fears.
Tokyo fears Obama strengthens Chicago Olympic bid

TOKYO (AP)—Japanese Olympic officials fear the election of Barack Obama as U.S. president could make his home city of Chicago the favorite to host the 2016 Olympic Games and harm Tokyo’s bid.

Tokyo, Chicago, Madrid and Rio de Janeiro are the four cities in the running to host the 2016 Games.

“I wonder how IOC members will react when Mr. Obama appears in a presentation for Chicago,” Japanese Olympic Committee President Tsunekazu Takeda told Japanese media Wednesday.

The IOC will name the 2016 host at its general assembly in October next year.

“Mr. Obama is popular and good at speeches, so things could get tough for Japan,” said senior JOC board member Tomiaki Fukuda.

Funny you bring this up. All of my friends also think this strengthens Chicago's bid. If Daley can survive an event that big he should be able to handle the Olympics.

It won't go to Madrid. Europe isn't getting back to back and 3 out of 4. Does Tokyo get it only eight years after Beijing and sixteen after Sydney? Does Rio get it only two years after Brazil hosts the World Cup?

Whats going against Chicago? I can't think of anything.

I hope it's Chicago so they can televise it live. Sick of finding out who won hours before they show it.

they say Rio was the favorite at this point..... and I think they would be the first south american host....

chicago needs to do alot of work before the decision which i think comes next summer or sept-ish 09. I think their first choice for the olympic village site fell through a few weeks ago.. public transit was also a question mark on the initial IOC assessment.
