Actually, Obama isn't that good unscripted - check out his debate performances. His academic background (Harvard, law professor etc) means he's a bit too objective, with too many caveats and so on. What you really need is the Bill Clinton style encapsulation of the popular mood in one jovially-delivered phrase, capturing the imagination and connecting with the audience. Academics don't tend to like that much, because there's not enough detail in it.
It's a different gift - Obama can produce it in set piece speeches, but not live. Clinton was a master at it, along with Reagan the greatest in the TV age.
