This is a matter of opinion... Tampa 2 Defense actually tightens up the safeties and positions the appropriate personnel to be just as effective on run as pass... TB has a good pass and run defense.. trust me...

I don't see how that is possible when the safties are always 15-20 yards off the line of scrimmage in the base defense. If a team really wants to run the ball against a cover 2 they can.

Its not a bad look... It works they're fast... Trust me.. Not just anyone can be in the Tampa 2 Defense... See how the safeties are cheated up? They have to be quick to adjust to a pass situation vs a run... but if it didnt work they woulnt have patented it.. lol

Last 6 years. Tampa against the run and the pass.

          2002: Run 5th, Pass 1
          2003: Run 13th, Pass 3
          2004: Run 19th, Pass 1
          2005: Run 6th, Pass 6
          2006: Run 17th, Pass 19
          2007: Run 17th, Pass 1

There defense is built on stopping the pass.

Your right, thats their strength no doubt... But see the 2 years they were ranked 5 and 6? That was still in the Tampa 2.. The setback years could be from injuries or simply not having the right personnel... The Colts are a good example of a cover defense that did a great job of plugging up the run last seaon..

I am not saying it is impossible to stop the run playing cover 2, but just that if a team really wants to run on a cover 2 defense, and is able to commit to it, they will be successful. It is the same deal against a zone blitz scheme. If a team really wants to spread out a zone blitz defense, ie the Steelers, and are able to commit to it it they will be successful.

I gotcha... Im not tryin to doubt you im just sayin TB bring a new look that most teams havent ever seen.. So you're right you would need an experienced running game to put up yards agasinst em but thats not uncommon in the NFL

Colts against he run and pass since Dungy has been there.

                  2002: Run 20th, Pass 2nd
                  2003: Run 20th, Pass 5th
                  2004: Run 24th, Pass 28th
                  2005: Run 16th, Pass 15th
                  2006: Run 32th, Pass 2nd
                  2007: Run 15th, Pass 2nd

Trend looks like it holds true for the Colts as well.

So if there is no cover defense that can stop a run, why do people run a zone? If a running game is what you HAVE to establish to win games..

There are a lot of factors that make it tough to commit to the run, ie not controlling the line of scrimmage, being down two or more scores, quarterback ineffectiveness, and not converting on third down.

But if a team can commit to the running game, and can overcome those factors they can score points on a cover two defense.

Great! I'm playing this play even harder because Brees pass for more yards on teams that don't play cover two! This is amazing! Thanks for the Info! Washington best bet is to zone the Saints! We have to much coming at you for man to man. Shockey, Bush, Colston, Henderson, Patten, ......and this list goes on!

Remember smoot wont be starting, only started because Springs was inactive. Dont have to worry about Colston now either.

Meachem will come in a contribute well while Colston is out.

Redskins could have walked away with this game if they could have scored in the red zone in the 1st half. Offense looked much improved from week 1, but the giants D is much stonger than the saints. Anyways cheers to the skins
