    Forward progress rule interpretation
I'm a bit confused on a play I saw in the saints game yesterday. On 4th an inches, Drew Brees jumped over his center and stuck the ball past the first down marker, then pulled it back so it didn't get stripped. He brought the ball back on his own, so why did he get forward progress? It was a 1st down, not a touchdown so the play should have kept running.

Good question - I have no idea. If you are running and you give up yardage, you don't get your furthest progress, so you shouldn't necessarily get the furthest you stuck the ball out.

I'd think forward progression only happens when the defending player pushes the opposing player backwards...

Example, say I run from my 20 to my 40, then back up to the 30 on my own, the ball will be marked at the 30, not the 40.... even though I was at the 40 at one point..

Anyone know what the rule actually is? Is there a difference between running backwards and pulling the ball backwards? The Lions can't complain too much, because both this play and another controversial spot on a 3rd down conversion should have been challenged. Poor coaching in my opinion.

One of the most useless posts I've seen in a while... I don't care about that game either, it's the rule that I care about. I want to know if that will consistently be called in such a way or if it was an error made by the officials.

In my opinion the officials have favored the Saints on numerous close calls within the past few seasons. Would be interesting if this play would have happened for the Lions where the spot would have been. Remember, officials are human too. They have emotions and the possibility for some calls to be lopsided is completely there. Veteran, well known quarterbacks and other start players get the benefit of the doubt more often than they should.
