A company in Vegas called LV Sports Consultants advises many casinos on the opening lines, though casinos may and do tweak these as they see fit. If you just want to bet for fun, that's ok. The great majority of folks who bet football are recreational bettors, they enjoy the games more if they have a little wager on the outcome.
Follow some of the good NFL 'cappers here on this board.
If you are looking at line movement, it's usually best, in general, to go AGAINST it. If a line moves a few points during the week, bet the dog.
As an SBR institution, jjgold, once said here: if you stick to betting only dogs you won't get hurt too bad.
