Wednesday that it has signed a third draft pick — a quarter of its draft-weekend haul.
Tackle Barry Richardson, the first of two sixth-round picks for the Chiefs, agreed to a three-year contract. Richardson joined fourth-round pick Will Franklin and fifth-rounder Brandon Carr among the signed members of the Chiefs’ 12-player draft class.
Richardson started each game in his final three seasons at Clemson and was chosen All-Atlantic Coast Conference in 2006 and ’07.
The Chiefs have been busy this offseason in strengthening an offensive line that allowed an NFL-worst 55 sacks last season. They drafted Richardson and first-rounder Branden Albert, who the team has penciled in to be its left tackle, at least when camp begins July 25.
Since December, the Chiefs have signed four veteran linemen and added two rookie free agents.
Coach Herm Edwards said when offseason practice ended this month that Albert and Damion McIntosh probably would start at the tackle spots, three-time All-Pro Brian Waters and Adrian Jones would start at left and right guard, respectively, and Rudy Niswanger would start at center.
The 6-foot-6, 319-pound Richardson is expected to be a reserve.
