I tell you what, not that the Chargers are a Super Bowl contender, but if they are to be a serious player in the playoffs, Ryan Mathews has to be a difference-maker.

A lot of ifs in that statement, but I just get the feel that Mathews will be a really good running back and if that happens in the next month, this team can contend for a Super Bowl.

They'll need the special teams.

I tend to agree with your statement but Matthews has been injury prone. That's not good for a young running back. What happens if they have to go @ Pittsburgh or @ New England in the playoffs?

If SF wanted a chance in this game they needed to keep it close, run the ball, keep the ball out of alex smith's hand, and force some mistakes in the passing game. SF needed an ugly game to win.

SF is getting blown out on the road like usual, and the strength of this team is NOT to come back. They are a bad passing team. They have some good players to pass too... Crabtree/Davis but they have bad play calling and bad execution.

It's a lot easier playing against a 1 dimensional team. The 49ers did have mild success running the ball early. It was important for SD to get that early lead, double digit lead to force the 49ers to throw... something they are bad at doing. The coach's mindset is to run the ball and play D. This is 2010 not 1985... the freaking rules changed. I wonder how much they even practice throwing with that 25 year old mindset?

SD got the lead, Smith is throwing and the 49ers are going up hill both ways in the snow.

The coach taking points off the board early didn't make/break the game, but if the 49ers were able to keep it close longer it would have effected the play calling and they would have been able to call more favorable plays.
