Why does my TV show the Fox NFL game with black on top and bottom of screen?

I currently have an old TV that is probably at least 8 years old. It does not have HDTV or anything like that. I only have basic cable with 15 channels or so total. I am watching this NFL game on FOX and i notice the game does not go full screen on my tv. Is there a reason for this? The top and bottom of the screen is black so it makes my view of the game worst. Does anyone know if i can change this to full screen?

I am not sure if I'm explaining this correctly but I'm pretty sure you guys know what i mean. Does anyone know if i can fix this? It does not do this on CBS though. Once it goes to commerical, i can see the whole screen but this game is short of shrunk if you know what i mean.

I dont know, but its starting to fvckin piss me off. My tv is zoomed in so i cannot see the any of the stats, i can barely see the scoreboard. It is only on fox for me too and it happens on saturday mlb games. Its not my tv because i went through all my setting and changed them and it didnt work.

Yes thats the same problem. i have. It does it for the MLB saturday games as well. Does anyone know if you fix it? i can barely see the scores.

They talked about it earlier, said it's so people without HD can still see more of the action width wise.

It cant be that...for me at least. Because it is cutting off some of the stats the come up on the left hand side.

If you had a HDTV, you would not see the black bars on top and bottom. Everything would be in full screen (16:9), and sharper then actually being there. Well if you have blurry vision from afar like me.

Really? I didn't watch the game today so I just figured that was it.

It is also doing on on Saturday mlb day games, but only on fox. So it is fox's problem not the tv. It has been bugging the shit out of me for the past 2 weeks or so, so i tried to fvck around my tv setting and nothing helped. Every other channel is perfectly fine.

Well mine looks fine tonight. Full screen (16:9) in HD. Directv on the Las Vegas local channel 5.
