NFL might change overtime format during playoffs
    CBSSports.com wire reports
INDIANAPOLIS -- An NFL spokesman said Saturday the league could change its overtime format for playoff games at a meeting next month. Under the new format, both teams would get the ball at least once unless the first team to get the ball scores a touchdown, Greg Aiello said. If the first team to get the ball makes a field goal and the other team ties the game, action would continue until a team scores again.
Under the current rules, the first team to score wins.
"There have been various concepts that have been discussed in recent years, but this one has never been proposed," Aiello said.
The competition committee will discuss the new concept with teams and players at league meetings March 21-24 in Orlando, Fla., when it could come to a vote. At least two thirds of the teams would need to agree to the changes for new rules to be adopted.
The competition committee met with the players' union and players on Thursday during the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis. Discussion continued when the competition committee met with a general managers' advisory committee on Friday.
The debate about the rules gained steam after the NFC championship game, when New Orleans beat Minnesota 31-28 in overtime and Brett Favre's Vikings never got the ball in the extra period. Under the proposed rule, Minnesota would have gotten another possession because the Vikings didn't allow a touchdown.
Overtime was adopted for regular season games in 1974, a sudden-death format that allowed games to end in a tie if neither team scored in 15 minutes. Overtime for playoff games always has been sudden death.

Isn't this kind of half a**ing it? If you kick a FG then the other guy gets a chance, but if you score a T.D. he does not. To me, that is like saying well, we want both teams to get a shot, but we also want sudden death, so we will splot the difference. Terrible idea. Either change the rule, or keep what you have. This way is rediculous.

Why only the playoffs? They act like regular season games aren't that important when in reality they are just as important as a playoff game sometimes.

I like the current format. If you don't have good defense, you can't win Championship.

The current format is awful. I like the new idea. Rewards a team that can play defense or offense.

change it all or don't change it. Don't change the game for the playoffs and not the regular season.

This. Not my first choice, but better than nothing. Also agree with others saying it should be adopted for the regular season too. I notice people at the top of every sports league being slow to make change. I'd guess it's because they're old farts who grew up in a slower-paced life.

I often wonder how the NFL got to be as popular as it is considering such idiots run the place. So, you play the regular season under one set of rules and then change them for the playoffs? Where are they getting these incredibly stupid ideas?

The NFL isn't about brains, it's about passion. These types of moves are never easy for the NFL.

what if they just played out the ot quarter as if it was the fourth? i guess the players would hate that shit, but the fans would eat up a free quarter of football

or better yet... make ot shorter than regulation quarters (like basketball does with ot, 5 mins) and play it out

This is being called the "Brett Favre" idea, because Favre did not get a chance to play in the OT game that the Vikes lost. To me, it is still half a**ed. If you get a T.D. you win, but if you only kick a FG, play on. Either change the system entirely or do not. And if you change the system, change it for all games, not just a selected few, called the playoffs.

So, I guess a bunch of butthurt Favre fanatics have been whining that a playoff game got decided by a coinflip because the loss couldn't POSSIBLY be Favre/the Vikings' fault. I hate the way the NFL only gets involved when something happens to a star (horse collar, the two rules based on Tom Brady)

This rule is stupid because of the complexity. What if one team had to punt or had a turnover and the 2nd team got a field goal? If that would end the game, I think I would defer every time. Otherwise it's just going to be stupidly complicated. The current system is better than this abomination.

How about the NCAA rules or just ban FGs in OT?
Walter forgot... when you're desperate's when you got no choice.
