A unit isn't necessarily 1% of your bankroll. It's usually what your base unit of play. If you bet $5 a game then that's your base unit. If you bet $100 then that's your unit. It doesn't really matter your bankroll. If your use to betting $100 but your bankroll is busted then your probably going to reup. If your unit is $100 and you bet $500 then it's a 5 unit play and means you really like the play.

My base unit tends to vary depending on my success. I've started with $1,000 and base of $100 on many occasions. If I roll that up to a few thousand I then move my base unit up. If I'm losing, I reduce my base unit. It all depends on the person. I know a lot of people who increase when they lose and decrease when they win. That never made much sense to me but that's how some people bet.
