The total is just a question of how much balance these two coaches want to establish between passing and rushing. If they're happy to leave the game in the hands of their QB's, it's going to be like that second half against the Packers. I can't imagine them starting out like that though. It was forced upon the Cards yesterday, because Green Bay resorted to all-or-nothing plays midway through the third quarter (onside kick, 4th down near midfield). That worked out remarkably well for GB, but it wasn't something they would have normally chosen to do. They had no choice, because the Cards put them in a huge hole. It was that all-or-nothing element, introduced early, that changed the game into a wild shootout. Before that, the game was much more structured.

These are passing teams and both are going to want to jump on each EARLY. I'm going to take the over.

i predicted all four overs in the playoffs and people critcized me. well guess what i like all the over again. 2 touchdowns per quarter is an average of 58. break it down and see if you like the over that way. dont look at the points look at it by touchdowns. there will be closer to 65 points in the one so definetly go over in this game!

At this point I would not touch the total in this game with a 10 foot pole.
The total is just a question of how much balance these two coaches want to establish between passing and rushing. Cards D was fine until they got stuck on the field after the onsides kick. Their pass rush was gassed after that. Over the whole season, the Cards D plays a lot more like the first half than the second.
Saints D is finally healthy here, save Charles Grant. And you know Gregg Williams is cooking up something with the week off.

N.O. defense was ranked 25th in the NFL in yards, 20th in pts, 21th in rushing yards, 26th in passing yards. Very sickly defense for a 13-3 team.
AZ wasn't much better with defensive rankings: 20/14/23/17. Not good for a playoff team.
Also, anyone wanna guess the last time two defenses this bad met in the playoffs, if ever? 2004: Vikings(8-8) 31 Packers(10-6) 17 Vikings D:28/26/21/29 Packers D:25/23/25/14

That's not the only way to measure defense. Arizona's D has been extremely aggressive early on in playoff games. They force turnovers and build a quick lead off those. I think the D may tire faster later in games, because they are so intense at the start of the game. It would explain why they build big leads early, and give them up almost as fast later in games. I would expect Arizona to put a lot of pressure on Brees right away. He's not seen that type of intensity all season.
