how is a field goal yardage defined

how do you define your nfl field goal distance is it from where the last down was from or where the kick is taken from

The yardage is determined by where the ball is placed down, +10 years. So if you snap the ball from the opponents 20, and use the standard 7 yard snap, the ball is placed at the 27, and the FG attempt is a 37 yard attempt.

Where it is kicked from. If youre on the 20 yard line it is a 37 yard fg. 10 for the end zone 7 for where it is held and kicked.

add 7 yards for the snap and 10 yards for the endzone, so at total of 17 yards added from the spot it is kicked from.

i would think they could use even more yards, like 8 or 9 if they wanted, hard to believe its exactly 7 every time on the snap.

It isn't exactly 7 yards every time. It is spotted each time, so it is possible for it to be 6-9 yards. Having said that, it's probably 7 yards about 90% of the time.
