The Washington Redskins are favored over another team by nine points. That’s almost double digits! The Washington freakin’ Redskins! Oh man a gift from the gods! Have you seen this team play this year? So who is their opponent? Oh, terrible Tampa Bay. Now I get it. Nothing ever comes easy, does it?
In a game of “something has to give,” one of these teams will finally cover (barring a push). The Skins are 0-2-1 and Buccaneer backers haven’t even come close to sniffing the right side of a point spread. Sunday’s 1 PM game at FedEx Field is going to be ugly, and I can’t wait.
I have both of these teams involved in some prominent Future wagers. With one, I’m laughing all the way to the bank. With the other, I’m just laughing at myself.
Tampa Bay’s season win total is already a lock to fall under 6.5. I’m not kidding when I tell you that the books could’ve set that line at 3.5 and I would’ve jumped on the Under. Right now I’m sitting pretty with that one.
The Bucs were throttled in their opener by Dallas 34-31. They then lost handily to one of the few teams they had a chance to beat this year in Buffalo. Last week they hosted the Giants and were shutout at home 24-0. You know it’s bad in Tampa when fans are actually talking themselves into getting excited for the beginning of the Lightning’s season.
I hereby give you permission to slap me right in the face, should you ever encounter His Breadliness. I’m not sure which hallucinogen I was toying around with when I placed a wager on Washington to win the NFC East. Whatever it was, I hate it. The Redskins have been just dreadful in losing to the Giants, beating St. Louis 9-7 which had the home fans booing throughout, and losing to the lowly Lions. Detroit snapped an unbelievable nine game losing streak in that mild upset victory over Washington. Wait did I say nine? I meant NINETEEN! If there are any guys who haven’t felt the company of a lady in a few years, just hang around the Skin’s practice field. All dry streaks guaranteed to come to an end.
With so many appealing matchups on the docket this weekend like Baltimore-New England, Jets-New Orleans and Green Bay-Minnesota, why would I touch this game with a 10-foot pole? Because I’m stupid, that’s why. That, and I think I can squeeze some money out of the NFL’s worst team this year in Tampa Bay. Did I mention that I’m stupid?
Washington’s hapless defense gave up numerous long drives to Detroit last week. This week they will be facing a fresh face in Josh Johnson. Johnson replaces Byron Leftwich who has been just horrible. This comes as no surprise to me, as Leftwich hasn’t been effective since he played for Marshall. Even knowing next-to-nothing about Johnson, he has to be an upgrade from what the first three games brought them from the QB position, right? Some of Leftwich’s passes looked more like punts for crying out loud.
Tampa Bay owns the second-worst overall defense (432.3 ypg) and rushing D. (187.3 ypg). That has Washington running back Clinton Portis all kinds of excited. Portis has been making crazy talk of busting out for 200+ yards and two or three TD’s to boot. The thing about Portis is, he doesn’t realize that he hasn’t been effective since he ran for Denver. This will probably be another case of his mouth being his best asset, as Tampa Bay improves their defensive numbers.
I could split nasty hairs all day long, but nobody should be subjected to reading about these two teams for too long. The bottom line is that the Skins should not be favored by nine over any team. Not even the laughable Bucs.
One other thing to keep in mind is that Washington is the streak-ender. Last week Detroit broke a 19-game slide. Tampa Bay has dropped seven straight regular season games. They sit at around +290 on the moneyline. I’m not sayin’ but I’m just sayin’. Know what I’m sayin’? I think you do.
