The end of the regular season passes this weekend with only the playoffs to look forward to, for some of us, that is. Hope still abounds for a few teams who haven’t clinched their date with the post season; for others, hope just wasn‘t enough.

Twelve teams are completely out and nine teams are definitely in. What’s curious is that for remaining hopefuls, a record of 9-7 in the AFC can get a couple of teams into the playoffs, and more alarming, 8-8 can get it done for a few in the NFC.
Let’s see who needs what and if they’ll get it
Oakland at N.Y. Jets: Well, life couldn’t be easier for the Jets. It just doesn’t get any easier than a visit from 2-13 Oakland to ease your way into the playoffs. … JETS.
Pittsburgh at Cincinnati: Things get a little more complicated for the Bengals. They firstly need to win and they secondly need the Jets to lose. I’m guessing neither will happen … STEELERS.
New England at Tennessee: Lots of help from other teams is necessary for the Titans to make the post season, but foremost, they need to win and they play a team that doesn’t lose much at this time of year. … PATRIOTS.
Jacksonville at Kansas City: Even if Jacksonville wins here, they need Oakland to come through and beat the Jets. I suppose the Jags can try the ol’ candy and flowers routine on the Raiders, but it won’t be enough. KC has a better shot at getting the help it needs and they are at home … CHIEFS.
Carolina at New Orleans: The Panthers need to win and then need help from a couple of other teams. Funny thing about help, it only helps if you’re helping yourself. … SAINTS.
Green Bay at Chicago: If the 7-8 Pack can go into the Windy City and take this game, they deserve to be in the playoffs, even at 8-8. I said if. … BEARS.
Atlanta at Philadelphia: The help Atlanta needs, they are probably going to get. But, can they go to the Linc and win? Nah … EAGLES.
St. Louis at Minnesota: Another 7-8 team still in the playoff hunt. What has the NFC come to? Minnesota is out, but they play spoiler … VIKINGS.
In other action, picks in bold
Detroit at Dallas
Cleveland at Houston
Seattle at Tampa Bay
Buffalo at Baltimore
Miami at Indianapolis
Arizona at San Diego
San Francisco at Denver
Last week: 8-8; overall: 143-97.
