Jets (+7) @ Detroit
Well folks after a short hiatus from my picks I am back tonight. As a special week 1 treat for us fans we get 2 MNF games, the Jets @ Lions and Rams @ Raiders. Week 1 always tends to have some weird stuff going on. Last year we had the emergence of Sergio Dripp, who bombed so badly on national television that he became a national sensation. The current spread has the Jets getting 7 points, so the debate really isn’t who’s going to win but rather are the Jets good enough to just keep this close. The Jets are obviously starting rookie sensation Sam Darnold. While this could lead to turnovers and allow the Lions to put up more points, thus making it easier for the Lions to cover the large spread, I actually expect the opposite. The Jets Offensive Coordinator Jeremy Bates is known for his West Coast scheme, favoring short horizontal passing and zone running. I expect Bates play calling to be very conservative with Darnold under center. I expect a lot of short passes in order to build up the rookie’s confidence. I also expect the Jets to attack the Lions weak run defense on the ground with Crowell and Powell.
While the Lions do have a very good pass attack and Offensive Line, I believe the Jets secondary is good enough to keep this one close. Morris Claiborne, Trumaine Johnson, and Jamal Adams are a good trio of defensive backs and I think Bowles will chalk up some interesting blitz plays to keep Stafford on his feet.
