These guys were obviously reaching out for publicity as $23,000 is nothing and wouldn't be noticed especially in Vegas. In my opinion to make the story stick they said they were letting it ride and "it's about the journey, not the money" but id lay odds that a friend or someone close was hedging these bets for him especially at this level.
