So I was blogging a bit for the NFL draft...thought I would post some things up. These review is based on first round only.
Notable events
Browns refusing to pick and stockpiling picks until they finally drafted in the 20's.
Lions
The lion's have done what was expected. Problem is 1st round QB's are about a 50% chance of success or bust. I would have preferred them drafting a LT and picking up a FA. Considering this is just a draft day evaluation they signed there pick the night before the draft.
2nd pick via trade
Pettigrew from Oklahoma. This gives the lion's a guy who is a gamer. This guy is tall big athletic. I'm sure his offensive cordinator is drooling about this pick still. He can stretch the middle of the field and has great hands.
Rams
They needed to get younger on the Oline and replace Pace who signed with the bears. They need to protect that 40 millions dollars on Bulgers contract. They did that.
Chiefs
Drafted the best DE for a 3/4 scheme in the draft. The are going to run a 3/4 defense. Why not Aaron curry? They have a slew of LB's including Veterans Zach Thomas and Vrabel.
Seattle
Curry makes there LB corps the top of the division now. If the offense can stay health look for this defense to be vastly improved from last year.
Jets
Gave away secondary players and draft picks to get the seemingly favorite QB in the draft. I think This is a good move. He could be a franchise QB, and they gave away far less than the Cutler trade, but Cutler is proven. They gave secondary players to make up for next years draft picks they didn't have to throw in. Good move by the jets.
Cinci
Palmer has needed protection for years...such a great QB killed by such a great franchise. Cinci went with the Alabama slacker, but he can play in games and has done so for years. I think this is a good move. Problem is there such a dysfunctional or terrible team I don't think it will matter. You can look for Andre Smith in a jail near you by the start of preseason.
Oakland
Al Davis needs to die. I don't know a single fan excited about this pick. Oakland gets a Z for there draft grade.
Jacksonville
Shored up there Oline and continued the run on OT, this was expected. Its not a reach and anytime you can get a 7-10 year player in the draft that is a good thing. Not many reservations about this pick.
Green Bay
Transitioning into the 3/4 defense scheme. They got the best available NG or DT for that scheme. They also traded back into the tround to get a very viable OLB for the 3/4 scheme. So far Green Bay is rebuilding that defense. The defense was the problem last year not the offense.
Added a OLB at the later part of the 1st round. Trading back into pick up a OLB. This will help them transition to the 3/4. USC LB traditionally have done pretty well in the NFL. LB is a easier position to project as well as others. This kids extremely productive at a very talented USC school. As long as he likes freezing his nutz off he'll be a great fit in GB.
San Fransico
Just drafted the next Jerry Rice, just kidding, but this Crabtree kid made good people look bad on film. Really good people look bad on film. This is a great pick for the 49ers who never thought this would happen and were more than happy to improve there WR corps.
Bills
DE from Penn st. I saw this kid play in person against Iowa at Kinnick. I was not that impressed by the kid. I think this kid could turn out to be just average. But he's a hardworking kid with a quick first step and sometimes thats all you need to be successful in the NFL...beat them to the edge...
traded back into the first round to get the 2nd OC that comes off the board. Bills are retooling there offensive line after losing 2/5 starters.
Denver
Knowshonn is now a Bronco...My boss is happy but confused. As I explained to him you got a bunch of veterans in FA... A bunch of injured guys who tores ACLs and stuff. He said yup...I go yeah, they make good 2nd string and 3rd down backs... This kids fast and will make more of an impact. I think Beannie Wells is a lessor RB than this kid. Wells played on a great buckeye team in a week conference... Bronco's now have a legitimate running game again!
2nd 1st round pick was a DE that could actually play a little bit of coverage, is a great athlete. This is a good fit for the 3/4 system there defense is converting to. Look for denver to continue to draft defense this draft even with all the FA signings they had.
Washington
Is trying to replace Jason Taylor and get more productivity off of the DLine... Who knows if this works...In theory it looks good on paper... But on paper Dan Snyder would have about 15 super bowl rings...
New Orleans
Picked up a CB, they desperately need to revamp the defense. Look for the saints to continue to bolster there defense this draft. Jenkins can play CB or SS, FS might be a reach for him he doesn't have excellent recovery speed. Cover 2 scheme would be best for him.
Texans
Have one of those teams where most of there guys are 3-6th year players...they are young but not there yet. Look for the texans to squeek into the playoffs this year. This choice of LB is a really good pick for them. There LB corps is pretty bland. This will help to add some talent to there front 7.
SD
Drafted a DE out of N Ill... This is a good move for them. He will fit there 3/4 scheme. The DLine is not particularly young for the chargers... At some point they will have to reduce cap space for other areas. I think this is one area they needed to address. Its a good fit for them.
Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay got a QB that wants to play for them. I think this kid could be the most successful QB out of the 3 taken so far... Lein****er still can't game as an example... This kid could really be something in 2 years.
Eagles
drafted Maclin. So now Donvan has two really fast guys to throw the ball to...but can they run routes...Jackson is okay hopefully this 2nd speed guy will help the eagles in there 3 WR sets... WR take time to develope though. So could be interesting to see how successful Maclin is in year one.
Browns
After piling up some picks they actually drafted someone. The best OC in the draft. Lets see if they trade back into the first round.
Minnesota
They enjoy drafting overrated Stoners...I think this Harvin kid is a KR PR nothing more. He's a 4th WR at best... and won't handle the NFL speed. But hey he can smoke weed with the best of them. Failed his combine drug test. But Minnesota's been through this before, its just this kid is no Randy Moss.
Baltimore
Drafted a very good tackle. Not sure if he can handle the LT position at the start. But he's solid guard or even RT. Ravens need to get younger upfront and this is a good start for them.
Falcons
Drafted a very good 4/3 scheme player. He doesn't hold the ground and take up space like a 3/4 NG or DT would. But he's perfect for the tank johnson shoot your gap Dline penetration type of Dlinemen. Falcons will continue to draft defense this draft.
Miami
Vonte Davis will play to his ability or he will have a 60 year old bill parcels with belltone up his ass so far he'll wish he never came to to the NFL. This is the best man to man CB in the draft.
Colts
Losing rhodes was critical. Colts needed Depth and they wasted that pick on Hart last year. Hart is a joke and can't compete in the NFL. Picking up the RB from Uconn is a good move. Again I think Wells is overrated. This kid from Uconn is the total package and pretty smart. The only question is his hands out of the backfield...
Giants
Nicks kids a gamer. Big frame, good hands, makes insane catches..you see that bowl game? kids a game, and will be a big time playmaker in the NFL. He's good route runner and has football instincts/smarts. Great move to grab the UNC WR.
Titans
The WR run continues as Britt comes off the board. Unlike Nicks its the opposite. Faster WR, crappier route skills. Speed isn't everything in the NFL so hopefully this kid can learn to run routes and explode out of his breaks. Titans desperately need a target though. Britt has deep play threat. Infact, he's lucky he's not a raider... Al Davis would be Jones'n for another deep play threat.
Cardinals.
Overrated Wells came off the board finally. I think this is a good fit for him. He can learn from Edge, and will beat out Hightower for the starting job. Hightower will become a 3rd down back and all will be good except Edge's time is done he will be released sooner than later.
Steelers
Drafted a DT... He's a 5 technique and will take some time to learn...Pitt has some aging Dlinemen so getting this kid into the fold with a year or two to learn and become prosperous is a good thing. This is what super bowl champions do when they get to the draft, they think ahead to the future.
