And if so, at what bet size should one give a shit?
If a guy isnt betting anything, then he doesnt know shit - see all the PSI air bettors like Wizzler on this site.
If he's betting a significant amount, there might be a better chance he knows something or at least is confident enough to risk something of value.

I risked $330.00 to win $200.00 on the ny giants "LIVE" they had a 10 point lead and the ball, should have bet more, But anyways im on the come back, I lost $10,000 in 3 days, Won 5 thousand back this past sunday thanks to phil at home, that game took 10 years off my life!

I don't like the word "unit" either. But it is a word and generally means 1% of someones' bankroll, whatever that is.

If someone has a 100k bankroll, a 1k bet to that person means alot less in comparison to the person that normally makes $20 bets.
This is why Units make sense. At least to me anyways. Not sure why so many people have a hard time grasping the logic in this.

The reason why I don't like it is because units shouldn't matter. If you like the bet, bet your max (whatever it is).

WWCD and crusty, this SBR link from 2006 might help. "Units" have been talked to death in here many times over.
wwcd is correct. you cant tell how strong a play is solely on amount.
example:
player a bets $2,500
player b bets $5,000
player b must be more confident in the play correct? not necessarily.
player a has a bankroll of $5,000 so the play is 50% of his bankroll.
player b has a bankroll of $100,000 so the play is just 5% of his bankroll.
this shows that player a has more confidence in his play than player b.
50 units >>>>>> 5 units

Crusty, I don't think you clicked the link. It discusses philosophy behind unit sizing.

Meh. All in how much money you have. Used to run for a bookmaker that exchanged BAGS of cash weekly. Wager amounts are all in how much you have, not how much you know.
