NFL underdogs went 12-4 this week ATS in the NFL... I don't have the time or patience to look back and see how often this happens but is this something common or is it because it's week 1 and there were some surprising teams to win?

Not common, not an anomaly. If you're thinking of blindly betting just dogs,
or just favorites, I'm pretty sure it's a long term losing proposition.
