Yes it did happen in 1972. Robert Irsay, the owner of the Los Angeles Rams, traded ownership with Carroll Rosenbloom, the owner of Baltimore Colts. Irsay became owner of the Baltimore Colts and Carroll Rosenbloom became the owner of the Rams.
