Why were the announcers so perplexed over 2nd and 3 instead of 1st and 10? I agree with Saints decision. First, you're 2 yards farther down the field. Second, isn't essentially a 7 yard gain on 1st down a pretty darn good result? 2nd and 3 is great. Whole playbook open. Which gets converted more often -- 2nd and 3 or 1st and 10. I'll say 2nd and 3 would be my guess. There must be a probability chart on this somewhere.

I just found it. Success rate on 1st and 10 is 66%. Success rate on 2nd and 3 looks to be around 72% or so, definitely more than 66%. So the Saints were more likely to convert the 2nd and 3 into a 1st down than a 1st and 10...PLUS the 2nd and 3 put them 2 yards closer. Peyton obviously made the right call and Michaels and Collinsworth were clueless.
