Buccaneers Doug Martin, projected to be a top-five running back, hasn’t been finding holes to run through, and now he won’t even get on the field, sidelined by a shoulder injury. Rookie Mike James (57 yards, 17 carries), a sixth-round pick from Miami, gets the start. Rookie QB Mike Glennon, who’s looked promising, will be throwing at the NFL’s No.5 passing defense. Panthers After hearing critics howl, Cam Newton got his wake up call three weeks ago.Carolina aims to move above .500 for the first time in five years at the expense of its win less NFC South rival. Since then he has completed 81.4 percent of his passes with four touchdowns and no interceptions. Newton traditionally plays well against the Bucs, as does WR Brandon LaFell. LB Luke Kuechly, with 48 tackles and two picks, heads the NFL’s No. 2 scoring defense, allowing 13.8 points. The biggest advantage for Carolina, however, has nothing to do with Newton. The Panthers, among the best in the N.F.L. at defending the pass, should easily shut down Mike Glennon, the Buccaneers’ rookie quarterback. Pushed into duty when Josh Freeman was benched, then released, Glennon will not have much help, as Tampa Bay’s most-talented offensive player, running back Doug Martin, is expected to miss the game because of a shoulder injury. Another rookie, Mike James, will be filling in for Martin, so Tampa Bay might struggle to score.
My Prediction: Panthers 24-14 Panthers -6 1/2. Carolina has Atlanta, San Francisco and New England next, so it better take care of business here.
