Don't even call him a game manager, call him a robot. He reminds me so much like Jason Campbell in that regard. The guy can line up and execute simple commands his coach gives. They run scripted plays. RUN, " Throw the drag route to the TE", RUN, RUN, WR SCREEN, 3rd and long run a dump off underneeth pass etc. over and over and over again. 1 or 2 times a game the coach will call a deep pass when he thinks he can get the defense sleeping on play action. It's the same with a lot of young or shitty QB's. They turn their brains off and turn them into robots.
People will talk about smiths "stats" last year and the low INT count and say I am wrong. But you know what, it's all manufactured with those scripted plays. The guy didn't even throw to WRs last year. Now he has Crabtree, Moss, Manningham, a dominant TE and a dominant O-Line and the team falls behind and they have not shot at coming back. You know why? He can't run a REAL offense. It's all manufactured play calling.
Here's the wrinkle. He has a simple command to throw it or else just take the sack. Example on 4th and 14 he throws a 3 yard pass and hopes the RB will pick up the 12 yards. THAT'S WHAT A LOSER DOES. You are down by 20. Throw the ball downfield and get the 1st down or throw a pick. Good QB's throw picks. Drew Brees does, Eli does, Brett Favre did, Kurt Warner did. You will never be good throwing 3 yard passes on 4th and 14. You will trick people with a LOW INT total but you will never win. Jason Campbell fooled people for years with that bullshit but you are better off throwing down field and winning sometimes and losing sometimes then always losing.
If Alex Smith was good you wouldn't see another QB rotate in with him. I don't see Ryan Mallet come in for Tom Brady. I don't see anybody come in for Aaron Rodgers to run wild cat. Eli Manning doesn't have a black QB come in for him to run wild cat. Alex Smith is what's holding this team back. Harbaugh is getting about as much as you can out of the guy but he is what he is.
