Enough to make a living, some good spending money, or nothing at all?
Figures would be nice.

For most, the better question is "How much do you guys LOSE doing this" It's pretty hard to win over a substantial long amount of time but it can be done.

I've made around 27k in 8 months on BetFair with a 10k bank. I've been lucky enough to have been to Wimbledon, US Open in NY and the Open Golf at St Andrews because of it. I would show you my blog, but posting links is not allowed on here I don't think. Mind you, I don't gamble. I 'trade' on Betfair, which is backing high and laying the bets off at the lower price. Much different to gambling. Many in the US will never know due to restrictions on Betfair in the USA.

This year I decided to take a serious approach to sports betting. I keep a current excel spreadsheet with all of my bets. I try and stay clear of the "gut" feeling wins. I use covers.com for all game info. At least for me the more time I have spent on research the better I have done day to day on my plays. As the previous poster stated, money management is the absolute key. You can't make those tilt bets to cover losses for the day. So far this year my record is 88-61-2. Mainly betting on NHL, NCAAFB, and NFL. I can't stress enough money management. You can have a winning record and due to juice still lose.

I've been gambling for 1 year and so far I have broke even. I've had zero money management so far, but if i had more discipline I could possibly be up. I like the action and its just a hobby for me so ohh well.

You always see the good side of sportsbetting when people post but the reality is most are losers in the long run. People who makes money are the experience and handicappers who sells pick. Quit while you can and focus on school.

There is an expression that goes "Don't believe everything you see on TV."
Well "Don't believe everything you read on SBR."
The plain truth is that the vast majority of sports bettors are losers. People postulate about their greatness for whatever warped psychological reason all the time here. They rejig their records or start again from scratch. They only post winning plays yet ignore all the bets they have running at the same time. They use a myriad of other tactics as well but sadly reality is constant. The sportsbooks could simply not exist without the losers. In fact SBR would not exist without the losers because they get a % of every loss every affiliated punter makes at a book and get advertising revenue from the books themselves. This is why the illusion of hope exists implicitly here. Everyone achieves the American dream right?
So where does that leave you the beginner? If you want to be recreational just acknowledge you will lose long term and treat it as a hobby. You will occasionally catch the good side of variance but don't let it fool you. You are a loser. Some people just want something to make watching sports more interesting and there is nothing wrong with that.
If you want to make money scalping/bonus whoring is the simplest form to do it. To make it worthwhile however you will need a large bankroll. There are other money making avenues as well but you would be best learning about them from reading books and through posts on this forum by Ganchrow. Suffice to say but there is a learning process that requires hard work. Brushing up on statistics and your high school algebra is never amiss however.
At that point you will be able to sift through the sea of misinformation for yourself but don't expect any edge to be handed to you. Information that grants an edge is largely proprietary and the reason it is not common knowledge is because it would not exist otherwise.
Good Luck.

Not so bad. I have been doing this for years off an on and seriously for the last 4 years. I do ok but some weeks are better than others. When I do win, it is no where near what I lost. In the end, you don't win. You ever been to that place they call Vegas. People like us, built that place. All we're looking for is some handicapper that happens to like a particular play that we want action on and it is enough to convince us that we are going to win. Any body can cap a game, because there's always sombody willing to agree with them!!!

I just started again 2 months ago and I'm following a handicapping service and i have increased my bankroll by 18%. I have committed a dollar amount that I'm willing to risk and following a strict money management system. I used to gamble when I was in college and did it for the action. With this service I'm using they don't bet on all the games that are on TV and it is hard not to bet on them but at the end of the day I would rather make money then just get the action. So I would recommend finding a good service and sticking with them and following a money management program the hard part is the discipline.
