Why do players think its more important to run every sec off the clock than to score?

    Why do players think its more important to run every sec off the clock than to score?
    Its amazing to me in both NBA and NCAA that players are so concerned with running every last second off the clock before taking the last shot rather than running the clock and making sure they can get off a quality shot. Happens all the time but just happened again to Michigan St.

    How about getting the basket with 5 or 6 seconds left and if you miss having a chance to rebound and shoot again or if you make it play solid defense for 5 seconds.

    This happens all the time and I'll never understand it.
