Tue 12/27 Illinois (-6) over Minnesota (1 unit)

Illinois has lost 2/3 with the loses coming against a due-for-a-good-game UNLV squad and a close loss to rival Missouri. Minnesota is a mild surprise @ 12-1, however they have not played a difficult schedule. After this game the Illini travel to play Purdue and Northwestern, so I think they look at this as a very important game to win. I expect Illinois to cover the 6 points.

I occasionally will post my reasoning for a pick.

Pick analysis: Butler(-3) over Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The reasons why I like Butler in this spot:

1) At 1-1 in conference, Butler needs a win to stay in close proximity to Wis-Milwaukee (3-0) in the conference standings. With this game at home and their next two games on the road, this is an early season "must-win" for Butler. They have dominated the conference for most of the last decade and I don't think that they're looking to be 2.5 games out of first (with 2 home loses) before January begins.

2) Both teams won tough low scoring games on Thursday. I believe that Butler is the deeper team, and with Wis-Milwaukee playing their 2nd road game in 3 days I think that will be a factor.

3) 3/4 Butlers top scorers had very poor offensive games on Thursday, I would expect a focused effort by them.

4) If points 1,2 & 3 are correct, the question then becomes, "is this years Butler team good enough to capitalize on the above reasoning"? They do have wins vs Purdue (neutral court) and @ Stanford, so they certainly are capable. They have also played a difficult schedule with loses vs Xavier (before the Cinn fight), Gonzaga, Louisville, and Indiana. This is a big one for Butler and I expect they will show up and play a good game.

Wisconsin Milwaukee (-1.5) vs Western Michigan (2 Units)

This is one of those non-conference tilts that both teams probably wish they could skip. Milwaukee is coming off a bruising road trip in which they won at Valpo on a late shot and blew a 10 pt second half lead to arch-rival Butler.

Western Mich is very banged up with starting power forward and leading rebounder Whitfield, and starting point guard Douglass both expected to miss the game. If that's not enough, starting forwad Hutcheson is a game time decision with an injured shoulder. Western Mich will most likely have a very difficult time scoring in this game. Last year Western Mich won in Milwaukee and the revenge factor is also in play here.
