    thoughts on Iona today?
after that loss at Marshall I'm hearing they really focused everything on defense during practice this week. we all know they can score but defending has been the problem. they have the athletes to be able to defend..they just have to have the desire and will power to do it.

thinking they come out with a strong defensive effort today.

The unofficial title of "Best Visiting College Player to Appear in Richmond This Season" goes to Scott Machado. He's a guard who isn't well-known to the masses, from a program that's not often on the lips of Division I fans.

Machado and Iona (7-2), the favorite to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference championship, bring a formidable challenge to the University of Richmond on Wednesday at 3 p.m. Four NBA scouts have requested credentials for entry to the Robins Center to evaluate Machado, who leads the nation in assists (10.4 apg). The 6-foot-1 senior from New York last season ranked second nationally (7.5 apg) in that category.

Machado, a four-year starter, averaged 4.8 assists as a freshman and 3.9 as a sophomore.

"It's more about what I was asked to do before and what I'm asked to do now," Machado said of his assist explosion this season and last. "I wasn't asked to be much of a passer before. Now, I try to get everybody else involved before I get myself involved."

He averages 15.4 points, but following Monday's practice, Machado said the first thing he examines when he receives a postgame box score is turnovers. He enters every game gunning for at least 10 assists.

There have been many assist opportunities in Iona's up-tempo offense. The Gaels, who have lost only to Purdue and Marshall, average 87.4 points. UR opponents are averaging 62 points.

"(NBA scouts) like how he's leading the team, how his vision on the court is, and his improved shooting ability," second-year Iona coach Tim Cluess said.

Machado scored 28 and had six assists in 45 minutes during Iona's 81-77, double-overtime win over visiting Richmond last season.

"He's very poised, under control. Has a great sense for the game. He can score in a variety of ways," said UR coach Chris Mooney, whose Spiders (6-3) come off Friday night's 73-51 loss at VCU. "He just presents problems because of the ease with which he passes the ball and finds teammates, but also because of his ability to score in different ways."

Machado's development for this season was aided by his summer participation on Brazil's under-21 national team, for which he was eligible because both of his parents are Brazilian. According to Cluess, Machado's most obvious improvement from last year to this year is a jump in work ethic.

"The experience of being able to play against men getting paid to play professional basketball, I could see how hard they work to make every dollar that they make playing the game," Machado said.

Is Machado sick? Hearing 2-3 players have flu like symptoms, can anyone confirm?

on the part of some of the players near the conclusion of yesterday's broadcast. I do not believe that he was using it as an excuse for the loss and neither am I. Marshall deserves a lot of cr

For what its worth sweetjones55 is on richmond today too... Hes been cold past 2 weeks tho. Decent write up on them tho. I've made just as much money fadeing him this season as tailing him but if machodo is sick that maybe a nice edge. Some players actually play better when they are a little sick I've noticed tho. I remember last year Kobe had the flu and played anyway and put up 40 anyway... Tread lighly I guess

Richmonds students already left for winter break

Won't be much of a home court advantage

The reason that it's at 3 is so that Iona can return home for exams, maybe their focus will be elsewhere today.. A lot of intangibles in this game today.

Going back to last year their defense was never really THAT bad its just their temp run and gun style sometimes makes it easier for opposing teams to leak out and get free baskets in the open court
