Was wondering if I'd see a thread about this game. Most any USC fan would tell you it's a gift. People are fully expecting our team to get run out of the gym. I follow our basketball team more closely than 99.9% of our fanbase. No doubt, it's been ugly. I was sitting courtside for the Elon debacle. People are calling for our coach's head and saying we might go 0-16 in the SEC. All that would suggest taking UNC and considering it a gift.
However, having watched this team over the years, we are fairly apt to play up or down to the competition. The major variable in this game that we haven't had in any of the others, is the lack of pressure/expectations. Everyone thinks the team is going to get blown out. They're not expected to win. The guys have been playing so damn uptight against the supposedly inferior competition. Here, they can just relax, try to play their game, and say nobody will be trashing us if we lose. With the game all the way out in Vegas, it may be a fairly empty gym. I don't know how much fire UNC will have for this game.
I'm not advocating betting on USC. I'm just giving a little bit of a perspective. Obviously this game will either be a major loss or an overwhelming win for Vegas. EVERYBODY is on UNC. Under Horn, USC has always played a lot better in the second half, for what that's worth. I think UNC by 20 has a solid chance of hitting, and, playing the odds, it might be worth betting. However, you also may want to be wary of a line that could have EASILY been 5+ points higher and still had most all the money on the favorite. We'll see if the Gamecocks can somehow muster a performance close to the level of taking out #1 (and undefeated) Kentucky two seasons ago.Comment -
wow nice write up. You make some very good points. The fact that this game is played in Vegas kinda makes me weary. Also you are right this line could have been 25 or 26 points and people would still bet on the #1 team in the nation against a struggling team.
