Some dude on ESPN radio right now is arguing a mid major will win the national title in the next five years.

    Agree?

    Disagree?

I'll believe it when I see it.

George Mason got throttled by Florida when they made it to the Final Four a few years back. And Butler's run last year was a once in a generation type of thing. They were the most talented mid-major team in decades most likely, and they still couldn't win in one of the weakest fields of contenders in years.

    Thoughts?
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

    I agree

I got San Diego St vs UNC and BYU vs Kansas in the final 4 with San Diego St vs Kansas in the title game with Kansas winning the title but you never know

I'm not sure he's counting the MWC as a mid-major. I highly doubt he is considering that UNLV once used to be a dominant program from that conference. Plus Utah, BYU, and New Mexico have had moments of glory.

In basketball, the MWC (along with the A-10/C-USA) are generally not considered mid major conferences because so many of their teams have had big $$$$ programs for a while. For instance, neither Temple/Xavier/Memphis nor Cincy/Louisville/Marquette (pre Big-East) would be considered mid-major teams.

Think more of the ODU/VCU/GMU/Gonzaga/Butler size.
No more of that talk, or I'll put the leeches on you.

It matters what you consider a mid-major.

IF you count the A-10, MWC, and other similar conferences then yes. Nothing is impossible, only improbable.

But if you limit it to Big Sky, A-Sun, SoCon, and so on then you are getting in the impossible range.

Understandable. But considering UNLV won the title in 1990, Louisville won two titles in the 80's, and Marquette won it all in '77, I'm thinking the definition of midmajor doesn't extend to their conferences. (or former conferences as it were)

its a bit of a semantical issue. Tough come up with an operational definition of Mid-Major.

but yeah, we'll see it. or at least continue to see the Butler's of the world keep getting close.

Every Year the NCAA has a bigger talent pool to draw from.

its not like the old days where just 5-10 teams got the best players and had the only shot at winning....

these days you got alot of NBA talent in this mid-major schools

UNLV was a member of the Big West when they won the title in 1990. Then they moved to the WAC, then they were part of the WAC that split off to form the Mountain West.

It has happened in the past and will likely happen in the future(assuming 6 major conferences). It won't happen in football though. It drives me nuts when the mid-majors beat the crap out of the little sisters of the poor and make a case to be in the title game. Buckets is a different story.
