Why does Akron foul down 11 with 7 seconds to go?

The game is over and some idiot kid from Akron runs out of now where and fouls Hansbrough when Notre Dame is trying to run the clock out.

Notre Dame hits both free throws and I lose by half a point. WTF was that?
